Smartphone app tracks trolleys

Woolworths has launched a new smartphone app that uses GPS to locate missing trolleys.

The app hopes to reduce the $50 million annual cost of trolley collection and replacement.

The app works in conjunction with the Trolley Tracker hotline and website, and, as with the other reportage services, all reports go into the monthly draw to win $1000.

Using the phone’s GPS, the app automatically logs the location of the trolley.

Head of store operations at Woolworths Ziggy Kwarcinski said the app will also make it easier for people to rid their streets of stolen trolleys.

“It literally takes a few swipes from a smart phone, and the exact location of the trolley will be reported to a local Woolworths trolley collection team,” Kwarcinski said.

“Our experience is that many trolleys aren’t collected because they are remote from established trolley collection routes.”

The app will run on iPhones and Android handsets.
