The August/September issue of Position magazine is now available for free digital viewing.
Position is the only Australasian independent publication for the surveying, spatial, mapping and geoinformation industries.
Now online for all to read, Issue#84 focuses on two areas in dire need of spatial attention. The rapidly growing field of smart transport and logistics, as well as the mining, exploration and resources sector. Like many industries, both of these are increasingly reliant spatial technologies, just as wider society needs these sectors to ensure economic and sustainable economies. The new age surveying feature is highlighted by articles exploring both the sky and the underground with new dimension.

- Water, waves and a wall of legal disputes
- Not your everyday cavity inspection
- Forest for the trees: high-tech tree accounting

Another feature article from Position founding editor Jon Fairall posits the question, “Who pays when water comes too close to shore?” With climate change driving sea level rise and an increase in the frequency and intensity of storms, coastal developments are facing a new era of threat. Fairall explores whether we are ready for the challenges ahead, and what role—if any—geospatial and surveying technologies hold in the matter.
A Q&A with a stalwart of the mine surveying industry, Professor Steve Hall, sheds light on the surveying side of the mining downturn, the impact of a current lack of graduates, and the prediction of another mining boom on the horizon.
Exciting new research from UNSW academic Iurii Shendryk, highlighted in an in-depth article, identifies how remote sensing and machine learning can now capture individual tree characteristics in 3 dimensions, including species, size and even health. Delivered on large scale, the value of this research for natural resource management is innumerable.
As always, this issue of Position also includes the regular features such as industry news, company news, product news, SSSI news, up front, event calendar and a host of feature articles.

Out now in print
While the August/September is the latest issue of Position available in digital, the latest print issue is the October/November issue- currently available exclusively through print subscription.
The issue’s cover story “Off the Grid” explores how spatial technology is removing the limitations on field crews of all kinds, enabling work that is smarter, more efficient and safer. Another article “Two Lost Ships” features a deep water hydrographic modelling expedition to uncover the fate of HMAS Sydney and HSK Kormoran, victims of Australia’s worst ever naval disaster. A host of other articles explore the next dimension of BIM, technology to locate missing persons and UAVs as an answer to archaeological studies.
Coming very soon
The upcoming December/January issue is set to be one of the biggest yet. Not only is it the directory issue–your guide to the players of the spatial and surveying ecosystem–but it also has a host of articles geared to delivering a snapshot of the progress of the industry as we enter 2017. With insights from former FIG President Stig Enemark on surveyors’ role in the SDGs, Jon Fairall’s update on the GNSS constellations we increasingly rely upon, and insights into the open data standards movement from the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC), you will want to get your hands on a copy of the upcoming Position #86.
