Headwall reveals combined multispectral/LiDAR UAV rig

Headwall’s Nano-Hyperspec sensor collects 270 spectral bands across the 400- to 1000-nm visible near-IR (VNIR) region and stores this data onboard its own 500-GB solid-state drive. Image provided by Headwall.

Headwall Photonics has announced a specially designed UAV-specific sensor payload combining LiDAR and multispectal scanners.

Headwall’s offering is based around a claim to a sophisticated integration package for novel UAV payloads, offering sensor pre-calibration, a generous 500 gigabytes of onboard SSD (solid state drive) storage, and a streamlined processing pipeline.

The sensors are designed to operate simultaneously, and the date streams are synthesised in real time in combination with the IMU/GPS, utilising the Digital Elevation Map for image creation, outputting a geo-rectified point cloud consisting of fused multispectral and LiDAR output.

Headwall hopes that the rising demand for LiDAR will drive new applications for multispectral remote sensing with this novel integrated product.

“The fusion of LIDAR and hyperspectral imaging represents a key enabling technology for many remote sensing applications from civil infrastructure inspection to crop monitoring,” said  Headwall CEO David Bannon.

“With many years of experience, we are delighted to closely work with all of the leading LiDAR manufacturers in the industry to bring these capabilities to market.”
