Registrations for the 2027 IHO Category A Hydrographic survey program at the Australian Maritime College are now open.
The program is intended for experienced surveyors who are ready to move beyond data acquisition and into hydrographic survey design, complex analysis and technical leadership.
Specifically, the intensive course will help participants develop high-level expertise in hydrographic data acquisition, processing and analysis in line with IHO S-5A standards.
Participants will gain hands-on experience with industry specific survey equipment and software, and how to apply theoretical knowledge and critical thinking in all aspects of hydrographic survey practice.
Attendance for the 48-week course can be either face-to-face or via remote learning, but will include on-site practical periods at the Australian Maritime College in Tasmania.
There are three main entry paths onto the course:
- By holding a Certified Professional Hydrographic Surveyor (CPHS) Level 2 accreditation, via the Australasian Hydrographic Surveyors Certification Panel or IBSC recognised equivalent certified scheme;
- A bachelor’s degree in a STEM discipline (Australian Quality Framework level 7) (assessment requirements might apply); or
- Completion of a Category B accredited hydrographic survey course and at least two years of recent hydrographic survey experience.
A compulsory University of Tasmania (UTAS) pre-course mathematics module (KMA002 Applied Mathematics Foundation) must be completed prior to commencing the program unless recognition of prior learning is granted for the basic subject of maths.
The maths module is offered in Semester 2, commencing 6 July 2026, with enrolments required by 28 June 2026 via Open Universities Australia. This subject is separate from the Category A Program and is eligible for HECS-HELP.
Key dates:
- UTAS pre-course maths module (a requirement if RPL has not been granted): 6 July 2026
- Course commencement: 11 January 2027
- Completion: 17 December 2027
