The SHIELD CRC bid team has submitted its Stage 1 application, having amassed a simply amazing amount of support. In total so far, the bid is being supported by pledges for around $57 million in cash from partners, plus $112 million of in-kind contributions. If successful, the bid would likely obtain a matching $57 million contribution from the CRC program, bringing the total to as much as $226 million over 10 years. Fingers crossed the bid gets through Stage 1 in July and progresses to Stage 2 later in the year.

On the subject of money, the International Cartographic Association has put out a call for applications from young researchers for scholarships to attend the EuroCarto 2026 conference in Brno (Czech Republic) in September 2026. A maximum of 5 scholarships will be awarded, and the application deadline is 10 June.

The European Copernicus program has announced that the Sentinel‑2A extension campaign, which commenced in March 2025, will be extended until the end of 2026. In February last year, it was decided that Sentinel-2A would remain operational to reflect a “commitment to maximising the capabilities of the flagship Earth Observation (EO) component of the EU Space Programme”. And in January this year, the satellite was tasked with undertaking test imagery of the Earth’s surface during the night-time segment of its orbits… something it wasn’t designed to do.
