GeoNext Program highlights

GeoNext will feature 5 main topics, each addressing a current issue or trend in the geo-industries.
 
The main topics include:
  • Free and Open Source GIS, including how to get started, pros and cons, and success stories;
  • Mobile, including how to get started in mobile spatial development, tips and tricks, which API to pick, native vs web applications, success stories;
  • Augmented Reality (AR), including if it’s useful or a gimmick, how it can be used in location applications, success stories;
  • Monetising Location, including what relevance does location have in (m)commerce? Are location based services such as Foursquare successful? How will they evolve? What is the future of NFC and commerce? And the significance of purchase history and your location and using your phone to pay;
  • GIS and Design, including why we need to involve experienced UI and UX designers, how to get started, tips and tricks, success stories, using GeoAnalytics to solve real world problems.
Some notable speakers include:
  • Dr. James Moody from the CSIRO will discuss the next, and sixth, wave of innovation – the convergence of digital and natural technologies.
  • Rob Manson from MOB will discuss augmented reality, and why it’s more than just a novelty, but actually a structural change in the way we interact with the network of computers and sensors filling our world.
  • Martin von Wyss from vW Maps will discuss why cartography – that is, good map design – matters more than ever in a digital world.
  • Darren Osborne from Geocaching NSW will discuss the rising popularity of new-age treasure hunting in the smartphone era, and how Geocaching helps contribute to projects like Open Street Maps, and environmental awareness.
  • Lisa Cornish from the Australian Government Information Management Office will discuss the state of Australian open data, how it compares with other countries, how data can currently be accessed re-used through data.gov.au, and what to expect in the near future.
  • Michael Haines from Virtual Australia and New Zealand Infrastructure will discuss his vision for a true-to-life 3D model of all the major cities in Australia, where planning, consultation, communication, and modelling can all take place. It’s like a business- government- and community-focussed Second Life.
