The Far North Queensland GIS Group (FunGIS) organisation has announced the dates for its 2026 conference.
The volunteer-run, not-for-profit group will hold its 2026 FunGIS Conference in Cairns on 13 and 14 August 2026.
The organisation is calling on geospatial professionals, companies and enthusiasts from across Australia to come along and help celebrate and preserve the rich history of GIS in northern Australia.
The theme for the 2026 event will be ‘Past • Present • Future’.
While the event will showcase the latest innovations in geospatial technology, artificial intelligence, remote sensing and spatial analytics, a key focus for 2026 will be documenting and sharing the stories, projects and people who have helped shape the profession in the tropics over the past several decades.
“We have an incredible geospatial history in Northern Australia, but many of those stories, maps and lessons risk being lost as people retire and technologies change,” said FunGIS Chair, Cherie Malone.
“The conference is an opportunity to celebrate where we’ve come from, recognise those who have made significant contributions, and inspire the next generation of spatial professionals.”
Putting Queensland’s spatial history on show
FunGIS is also inviting submissions for its Geospatial Excellence Awards, which recognise innovation, leadership and impact within the profession.
Nominations are currently open across multiple categories, with the awardees to be announced at the Conference dinner on 13 August.
The conference will also feature a Map Gallery showcasing historical maps, aerial imagery, GIS projects and cartographic works that highlight the evolution of spatial science in the region.
Conference organisers are encouraging participation from professionals at every stage of their careers, from students and emerging practitioners through to long-serving industry leaders.
Opportunities currently available include:
- Conference registrations (early bird rates available until 19 June 2026)
- Abstract submissions and presenter opportunities
- Award nominations
- Sponsorship opportunities
- Contributions to the Map Gallery
FunGIS has been connecting and supporting the geospatial community across Far North Queensland for more than two decades, providing opportunities for professional development, networking and knowledge sharing.
