First up is Dale Atkinson, presenting Native Title and the role of Cadastral Surveyor.
There have been over 120 Native Title Determinations registered in Queensland alone. Complicated legal concepts, lengthy federal court judgements and cultural sensitivities have made this a very avoidable issue for the cadastral surveyor. This talk attempts to provide a basic understanding and argues that there is a vital role for cadastral surveyors to play in this process.
Dale is a cadastral surveyor that runs a small rural based practice in North Queensland. He has a keen interest in rural surveying and maintains a good relationship with many retired rural surveyors. Dale is currently the Chair of the Qld Land Surveying Commission Committee.

Supported by the Australian Space Agency, the South Australian Space Industry Centre and SmartSat CRC, the 12th Australian Space Forum will provide an opportunity to stimulate ideas, share information about emerging technologies and network with space sector leaders and the broader community.
Participants will be able to attend in-person at the Adelaide Convention Centre in South Australia, or virtually through the event’s global interactive platform.
Forum sessions will include international panels covering the following thematic areas:
- National and international space trends
- Moving from cubesats to larger satellites — building Australian expertise and capability
- Reimagining the social, environmental and economic opportunities enabled by Earth observation technologies
- On-Earth and off-Earth remote operations, in the context of human exploration as well as applications right here on Earth
In partnership with the Australian Space Agency, the Space Industry Association of Australia will host the Southern Space Symposium at the National Press Club in Canberra on 29-30 November 2021.
The Southern Space Symposium is the Australian space industry’s flagship annual conference, bringing together space industry experts and decision-makers from across Australia. At a pivotal moment, the Southern Space Symposium will this year bring space industry together with government and parliament for two days in Canberra to help shape the future agenda for Australian space’s aspirations.
Participants will include federal government departments and agencies, international agencies and missions, defence and space prime contractors, listed space companies, academic and research organisations, small and medium enterprises, space start-ups, and individual space professionals.
The Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management (UN-GGIM) will convene the second United Nations World Geospatial Information Congress (UNWGIC) in Hyderabad, India from 10-14 October 2022.
Hosted by the Government of India through its Ministry of Science and Technology, the convening of the UNWGIC arises out of the mandate from the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) to the Committee of Experts to convene global forums to promote comprehensive dialogue on global geospatial information management with all relevant governments, international organisations and stakeholders.
With an overarching theme ‘Geo-Enabling the Global Village: No one should be left behind,’ the second UNWGIC will reflect the importance of integrated geospatial information to support sustainable development and the wellbeing of society, address environmental and climate challenges, embrace digital transformation and technological development, and catalyse vibrant economies.
The congress addresses the development and strengthening of integrated geospatial information management, its capacities and capabilities, and demonstrates the importance of international cooperation and coordination for building a human data and geography community, against the three pillars of sustainable development, for a shared future and a better world, leaving no one behind within an inclusive and equitable global society.
The UNWGIC will feature a high-level, plenary, special and parallel sessions. While the actual second UNWGIC program covers three days (11 – 13 October), the overall event will be a weeklong (10 – 14 October), and will include global and regional meetings, workshops and learning events, expert meetings and side events, including the eleventh plenary meeting of the Regional Committee of United Nations Global Geospatial Information Management for Asia and the Pacific (UN-GGIM-AP), as well as the annual meeting of the UN-GGIM Expanded Bureau.
RPAS in Australia Skies is back for 2023. The conference is the Australian Association for Uncrewed Systems’ (AAUS) main event for the year and has established itself as a landmark event for the Australian drone industry, drawing interest from key government personnel, representatives from the regulatory and safety bodies, defence force, RPAS and UTM representatives, end users and academia.
The hybrid event will take place over two days and will include a combination of presentations and interactive panel discussions.
The conference will cover:
- RPAS related policy and regulatory updates from Australian and international government agencies.
- UAS Traffic Management, low-level airspace and integrated airspace systems
- Industry challenges and perspectives
- Continuing development of a professional and safe industry.
- Emerging technologies and innovative solutions enabling RPAS integration in Australian airspace.
- Emerging applications — benefits, viability and social acceptance
- Case studies of drone use and challenges in emergency services, infrastructure inspection, delivery, mining, and agriculture.
The 2023 ACT Geospatial Conference and Excellence Awards will bring together colleagues old and new to hear the latest updates from across the local geospatial industry.
The call for abstracts for the event is now open. Any topic of interest to the geospatial industry is welcome, including surveying (cadastral, engineering, hydrographic, mining), GIS, remote sensing and geodesy, or broader topics such as new technology, diversity and workforce management.
The deadline for submission of abstract proposals closes at midday on Tuesday, 3 October.
The Geospatial Excellence Awards Reception will be held at the conclusion of the conference sessions, giving attendees the chance to enjoy drinks and canapes whilst networking and celebrating the award winners.

BeGeo, an initiative of the Belgian National Geographical Institute (NGI), is an annual national event for the geo sector in Belgium.
The BeGeo conference combines with a geographic information fair to bring together a wide range of players from the public sector, academia, research, the private sector and associations. This year, the organisers have once again chosen Brussels Expo as the location for the event.
BeGeo says its vision is to be a platform where important players from the sector meet and thus actively contribute to the growth of the knowledge and competences necessary to tackle complex challenges and realise the great potential of geodata.
