Gall-Peters projection

The world according to Gall-Peters projection.

Geoawesomeness once again lives up to its name with two videos that will help describe the differences in map projections to your non-map-making friends. It states that the map we’ve all grown up looking at (that is, one based on Mercator Projection) is actually a lie, and it shows the relative sizes of the continents as they actually occur.

GPS World has the news (broken two weeks ago – how did I miss that?) that the FAA has given Amazon the go-ahead to test out deliveries by drone. Super cool stuff.

The AnyGeo blog has highlighted a post from the OpenGeo crew, where they explain the various Geotech and OpenGeo components. To quote AnyGeo, “For the non-developer type like yours truly, this is an excellent and must read if you think there’s any chance you might be considering  a move to open source solutions in your mapping workflows.”

Speaking of OpenGeo, Boundless has written a post all about using GIS in supply chains, with specific reference to the OpenGeo suite.

Drone Life has the news that lightweight radar units – known as metamaterial radar – will find their way onto UAVs and cars, aiding collision avoidance and navigation.

Sensors & Systems has asked the question “Where does BYOD fit in for field data collection?” (BYOD = Bring Your Own Device, in case you were wondering).

The author behind LiDAR News is over at the SPAR International conference right now – which has the tagline “3D Technologies for Asset Actualisation” – and has been blogging away. The first of his posts outlines the keynotes at SPAR, and there are several more following it that you can also read up on. A must for anyone interested in the bleeding edge of 3D spatial tech.

The ArcGIS Blog has an ‘introduction to Big Data’ and offers a tutorial on how to integrate Hadoop with ArcGIS to complete analysis on your geospatial big data.

Maps Mania has an interesting map that – with the recent news of the return of the X-Files – will appeal to the ‘believers’ out there: it’s a compilation of all the UFO sightings in the USA since 1933-2010. The Truth is Out There*
