GeoCommons makes cloud-based GIS analysis free for everyone

By on 21 June, 2011

While there are many web-based mapping tools available for free, there are precious few that allow you to also run analytics – the heart and soul of a GISystem – without charging fees. The reason is simple; analytics cost serious CPU time.

However, GeoIQ has recently integrated its once enterprise-only web-based GIS analysis over to its public, free GeoCommons service. This means that any non-commercial entity now has free access to powerful GIS analysis tools – and the costly associated CPU time – to use on their own data.

Users can upload their own datasets to the geocommons servers, or else integrate their own Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL, ESRI, MongoDB, and other datastores and API's with the rest of GeoIQ's features.

Naturally, the data is stored securely, and makes use of enterprise-grade permission and access controls.

There is also an open API for analytical integration into applications, and the ability to make your company’s maps available to mobile clients.
