The ALGIM GIS Symposium 2012

By on 21 February, 2012

Registrations are now open for the 2012 ALGIM GIS Symposium. This event has become an annual feature on the ALGIM calendar after the success of the Inaugural GIS Symposium in 2011. The ALGIM GIS Symposium is the only GIS-specific event tailored for local government in New Zealand. It will run from 2–3 April 2012 at the James Cook Hotel Grand Chancellor in Wellington, New Zealand.

The programme is currently being compiled, with highlights for the Symposium including:
  • Minister for Land Information, Hon Maurice Williamson MP will return to formally open the Symposium, where he will address delegates followed by a Q & A session.
  • Ian Smith, Auckland Council’s Geospatial Manager will answer ‘where are we now?’ in follow up to his presentation featured at the Inaugural 2011 ALGIM GIS Symposium, where he was ranked number 2 presenter.
  • David Swann, CEO of NorthSouth GIS NZ will inform delegates about ‘Predicting GeoSpatial Futures’.
  • A year on from the devastating Canterbury earthquakes, representatives from Christchurch City Council, Environment Canterbury, Eagle Technology Ltd and Intergraph Corporation (NZ) Ltd will share their stories and conclude with a panel discussion.
  • Attendees will discover how the result of a simple request within a major project at Southland District Council has seen Mark Day (Manager – Property & Spatial) and his team evolve a key tool used to assess the value of productivity flowing through a roading network to a destination.
ALGIM is also accepting nominations for the 2012 ALGIM GIS Awards. The awards programme will recognise best practice in GIS amongst New Zealand local authorities and consists of a GIS Professional Development Award and GIS Project of the Year Award.

Guidelines and information about the awards along with entry forms are available on the ALGIM Website under the Awards Section. The entry / nomination form for each award contains further details on the award process and what you can expect to happen after your entry / nomination has been submitted.

Three finalists for the GIS Project of the Year Award will present their case studies as part of the Symposium programme.
The winner of the ALGIM GIS Professional Development Award 2012 will be given the opportunity to attend the spatial@gov2012 Conference in Canberra, Australia.

The awards will be announced and presented at the 2012 ALGIM GIS Symposium on the evening of April 2. The awards will be celebrated with a formal dinner and live entertainment.
