NSW 2023 geospatial award winners announced

The Innovation Award for Medium to Large Business was awarded to the NSW Department of Planning and Environment, WSP and Giraffe team for its Land iQ initiative. The award was presented by Tony Wheeler (centre), CEO of the Geospatial Council of Australia.

Around 100 people gathered at the PARKROYAL Parramatta hotel on Thursday, 24 August for the Geospatial Council of Australia’s NSW conference and for the presentation of the NSW winners of the Geospatial Excellence Awards.

The Awards, formerly the Asia-Pacific Spatial Excellence Awards, are presented once per year on a state/territory basis, with the winners going into the running for the prestigious Oceanic awards, the winners of which will be announced at the Locate Conference in Sydney in May 2024.

The NSW 2023 winners were announced and presented with their awards at a ceremony held at the conclusion of the day-long conference.

The winners of the NSW awards for 2024 are:

  • Community Impact award: Woolpert, CSIRO and the National Emergency Management Agency for their Northern Rivers Resilience Initiative.
  • Innovation Award for Medium to Large Business: NSW Department of Planning and Environment, WSP and Giraffe for Land iQ.
  • Geospatial Enablement Award: Bennett and Bennett for its Tweed Shire Flood Recovery project.
  • Technical Excellence Award: Veris and CPB Contractors for the M6 Stage 1: Scanning for conformance project.
  • International Partnership Award: WaterNSW and Niricson for their UAV Centred Dam Surveillance Assessment Mapping Pilot Project.
  • Environment and Sustainability Award: Woolpert, CSIRO and the National Emergency Management Agency for their Northern Rivers Resilience Initiative.
  • Postgraduate Student Award: Atul Kumar Rai, University of Wollongong

The Environment and Sustainability Award was awarded to Woolpert, CSIRO and the National Emergency Management Agency for their Northern Rivers Resilience Initiative. The award was presented by Brittany Baker (centre), NSW Chair of the Geospatial Council of Australia.
The International Partnership Award was awarded to WaterNSW and Niricson for their UAV Centred Dam Surveillance Assessment Mapping Pilot Project. The award was presented by Dan Haigh, co-founder of The Spatial Distillery Company (right).

The entire GCA NSW Conference and awards presentation was a magnificent occasion, and the organising team — especially the hardworking Katie le Miere — is to be congratulated for pulling together such an interesting and enjoyable event.
