Global drone use, incidents climb under Covid-19

By on 27 April, 2020

Melbourne-based UAV cybersecurity firm DroneSec has tracked a rapidly increasing number of RPA-related incidents in 2020.

The security firm published some interesting numbers in its most recent DroneSec Notify Threat Intelligence briefing, which monitors recorded incidents worldwide for incidents affecting UAVs, counter-UAV systems and Univeral Traffic Management (UTM) systems.

DroneSec has collated a total of 448 incidents in 2020 to date, with the global number of incidents rising from 135 in January to 174 in March, up from 4.3 to 5.6 incidents per day.

Analysis by DroneSec that accompanies the report suggests increase use of drones by authorities may account for the rising number of incidents.

‘The number of events logged has increased month after month despite the increasing number of regulations set by regulators to dampen drone operations,’ the authors write.

‘One reason could be due to the extensive usage of drones worldwide in combating Covid-19. The Chinese government has shown precedence in the effectiveness of drones in disinfecting neighbourhoods and monitoring movements of citizens. Global regulators are also following suit in the utilisation of drones to maintain law and order during the crisis.’

DroneSec offers a weekly round-up of threat anlysis via their DroneSec Notify Threat Intelligence briefing.
