Geoscience Australia open day

Geoscience Australia will again open its doors to the community to celebrate National Science Week on Sunday, 19 August 2012, from 10am to 4pm.
 
Open Day offers a diverse program of activities that showcase Geoscience Australia’s wide range of work in the fields of petroleum, mineral, marine mapping, groundwater and natural hazard research.
 
Geoscience Australia's Open Day hosts a range of science talks, tours, displays and activities for all ages.
 
There will be opportunities to talk to Australia’s leading geoscientists and learn about our recent achievements in the Earth Sciences. Visitors will be able to discover how earthquakes are monitored, view the world using the latest 3D technology and find out what careers are available at Australia’s national geoscience agency.
 
The Science Talks for Open Day will be:
10.30am Looking after Nemo: Seabed mapping and habitats An overview of the seabed mapping work done through the Coastal Marine and Climate Change Group
11.15am Our Place from Space: Earth Observation How we use satellites to gather information
12.00pm Searching the Deep Earth: uncovering Australia’s hidden mineral wealth The cutting-edge techniques being used to discover Australia’s hidden mineral resources
1.00pm Earthquakes in our Backyard: Looking at recent earthquake events in Australia
New Activity
2pm – 4pm Camera Rock and Roll – Short film making workshop Want to learn how to make your own movie? Geoscience Australia will be holding a short film making workshop during its Open Day. What to bring: a camera or a mobile phone or tablet device that can take video footage.
