CRCSI 2 outlines further details on national positioning programme

By on 3 February, 2011

The CRCSI2 issued the first communiqué for the national positioning programme last month.

The Positioning Program brings together GNSS researchers, private industry and government agencies to address the challenge of designing, building and operating a high accuracy, real-time, nation-wide positioning infrastructure.

Research activities will be strategically focused so that long-term benefits are seen by a broad user base.

The CRCSI-2 held workshops last year for members to talk over the potential for such a scheme.

It was decided the programme will comprise six major projects: Ambiguity resolution and improved atmospheric models for multiâ€ÂGNSS, next generation positioning Infrastructure, multiâ€ÂGNSS processing strategies and services, and endâ€Âuser positioning applications of a national positioning infrastructure. A further two projects are still to be decided.

A Program Board has been set up to provide strategic guidance, advice and oversight of the programme.

It will make recommendations on the continuation, variation or termination of projects based on progress, achievements, continued relevance and the impact of internal and external factors.

The communiqué says: “The world is on the cusp of a new era in satellite positioning. A number of new global navigation satellite systems are about to be launched. A national positioning infrastructure that takes full advantage of these technological advances in a coordinated and accelerated fashion and in a way suited to the particular needs of Australia, is a fundamental step toward spatial enablement.”
