The theme for this year’s conference:
“Earth – Air – Fire – Water”
The conference theme was chosen to reflect the diverse nature of spatial and surveying sciences which is inherently a multidisciplinary pursuit. Individuals within the spatial and surveying industry undertake many projects and tasks from the conference theme. From monitoring weather systems using small IoT devices to sending multi million dollar satellites into space, the surveying and spatial science fundamentals form the critical building blocks for success.

The Future of Place Summit aims to be a day filled with critical discussion, knowledge sharing and networking around the intersection of people, place technology and data.
The event will focus on four themes:
- Designing for digital lifestyles — A new human-centred planning approach
- From precinct plans to development reality — The evolving digital and data DNA of urban growth
- Data-inspired discussions — Tapping into the real voice of the community
- Streets reimagined — The digital backbone for better experiences

Unable to hold its scheduled 2021 NSW Regional Conference earlier in 2022, SSSI is now inviting the spatial community to join it for a special online seminar featuring some of the speakers from the original program, along with the announcement of the NSW winners of the 2021 Asia-Pacific Spatial Excellence Awards.
This seminar will focus on the importance, efficiency and innovation spatial data can provide in crisis management situations and will feature presentations on:
- Finding your Friendship Island amongst a sea of COVID restrictions — presented by Stella Blake-Kelly, Founder/Director, Cartisan
- Geospatial Intelligence: Providing real-time insights supporting NSW State Emergency Service’s emergency management response — presented by Melissa Daley, Manager, Geospatial Intelligence Systems, NSW State Emergency Service
- COVID-19 Near Me: Trials and tribulations — presented by Kenneth Tsang, Director, jxeeno
The 2022 Tasmania Surveying & Spatial Conference will be held on Friday, 2 September at Wrest Point in Hobart, and promises to be a fantastic opportunity to learn and network with SSSI members and the broader surveying and spatial community.
This year’s event will include a gala dinner, held in partnership with the University of Tasmania, to celebrate that institution’s 50 years in the field of surveying and spatial teaching.
In addition, the event will include the presentation of the 2022 Tasmanian Asia-Pacific Spatial Excellence Awards.

The 15th International Conference on Spatial Information Theory, COSIT 2022, will be held in Kobe, Japan, 5 to 9 September, 2022. Established in 1993, the Conference on Spatial Information Theory (COSIT) is a biennial international conference series concerned with theoretical aspects of space and spatial information, aimed at advancing geographic information science and its emerging research frontiers.
The conference offers three (refereed) submission tracks with double-blind reviews: vision papers, full papers, and short papers. Embedded in the conference will also be an on-site mentoring program for doctoral students.
Contributions can cover a broad set of conference-relevant themes such as (but not limited to):
- activity-based models of spatial knowledge

Smart Cities Week Australia and New Zealand 2022 will bring together the who’s-who in smart cities, digital twins and future-of-place thought leadership in an energising, open dialogue on how to leverage technology to deliver better quality of life for citizens.
Smart Cities Week offers sessions designed to bring demand and supply side stakeholders together in a way that incubates business opportunities and incubates the smart cities investment pipeline.
This year, the event will be delivered in conjunction with Digital Twin Week, known as the premier platform for showcasing, exchanging and networking around all things Digital Twin in the built and natural environment. The event will offer a series of opportunities to connect and gain information and insights on Digital Twin activity, policy and practice from government and industry leaders.
Leading the line-up for the 2022 event is Platinum event sponsor, Amazon Web Services, who will offer attendees a look at AWS-powered twin cities, and how towns, regions and cities, can use cloud benefits, technology and support, to realise their local planning vision.

The 2022 SSSI Queensland Regional Conference will be held on Friday, 14 October at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre. It promises to once again be a fantastic opportunity to learn and connect with SSSI members and the broader surveying and spatial community.
The Queensland Asia-Pacific Spatial Excellence Awards dinner will also be held in conjunction with the conference, celebrating the outstanding work being undertaken across the region.

The Tasmanian Spatial Information Council (TASSIC) will hold a Geospatial Workforce Development Forum on 9 November 2023, to help shape the future of the geospatial sector in Tasmania.
The Forum will bring together key stakeholders from education, employers, government and suppliers to address critical challenges and opportunities facing the sector.
The Forum will include presentations from representatives of industry, government and the education sector, as follows:

- Rob Rowell (Insight GIS)
- Ben Morris (Local Government Association of Tasmania)
- Michael Krome (Australian Spatial Analytics)
- Arco Lucieer (University of Tasmania)
- Sam Ebert (TAFE NSW)
- Troy Robbins (TasTAFE)
The event will conclude with a moderated discussion session led by Danika Bakalich (Geospatial Council of Australia).
The Forum will be a hybrid event with both in-person and online attendance options available, and it will employ the Menti-Meter program to facilitate discussions, ensuring that each delegate’s voice is heard and their input valued.

The Geospatial Council of Australia’s Western Australia Digital Twin Summit will be held on 15 November 2023.
The event will focus on Spatial Digital Twins, and attendees will hear the latest developments in this rapidly developing space from government, academia and private industry presenters.
The WA Asia-Pacific Spatial Excellence Awards dinner will also be held in conjunction with the conference, celebrating the outstanding work being undertaken across the region.
