Geospatial intelligence provider BlackSky has been awarded a US Air Force contract to analyse the efficacy of Covid-19 mitigation efforts on its personnel.

According to the company, BlackSky will deploy its Spectra AI and machine learning platform to monitor social distancing at US military bases globally, and track the spread of Covid-19 to protect deployed personnel.

The firm will monitor infection rates from local jurisdictions, importing them into epidemiology models and use its imagery analysis capability to identify anomalies in social distancing at military facilities, according to CEO Brian O’Toole.

“BlackSky is giving decision makers the crucial information they need to protect U.S. interests at home and overseas amid today’s rapidly shifting threat landscape,” he said.

“By combining global geospatial data sources with satellite remote sensing data, Spectra provides a near-real time look at the evolving pandemic and provides critical insights to inform national security.”

BlackSky will also monitor facilities critical to the defence industrial supply chain including logistics depots, maintenance facilities, petroleum reserves, and airport facilities, according to the company.
