Maps Mania has a post that outlines some of the more impressive uses of the WebGL globe platform, including one that plots the location of active satellites, inactive satellites, and space junk in orbit around Earth.

 

The BBC has the story that while the search for MH370 hasn’t yet revealed a wreckage, it has revealed newly found extinct volcanoes and other details on the sea floor.

 

The ABC has aired a radio show on the ‘meteoric rise of Queensland’s spatial industries’ which involves interviews with Steve Jacoby, the executive director, Land and Spatial Information at the Department of Natural Resources and Mines; Richard Simpson, CEO of SIBA; and Dr Tim Foresmanm from QUT, whose leadership of NASA’s Digital Earth Initiative helped pave the way for Google Earth.

 

The Global Post has a story of an initiative in Japan that aims to create data for 3D printers that will allow users to print tactile maps for the blind – for only $1.40 per tile.

 

The World Resources Institute blog has an animated map that shows the increase of global carbon emissions across the world over the last 160 years.

 

It’s a dry read, but important to anyone using or developing UAVs: the Spatial Law and Policy blog has an overview of the US Federal Aviation Authority’s (FAA) guidance on the commercial use of UAVs. A topic which has previously caused some drone researchers and manufacturers to jump ship to other countries, including Australia.
