A new free publication provides a practical guide to GeoAI and introduces the myriad opportunities being offered by the new field.
Location & AI: The Basics – A practical guide to GeoAI, published by the Location Innovation Hub, explains how AI and location data can create new opportunities for organisations.
Specifically, it shows how the merger of AI and location-based data or intelligence can create value for businesses, public services and society as a whole.
According to the Location Innovation Hub, GeoAI is becoming increasingly important for gaining deeper understandings in fields such as the environment, infrastructure, mobility, agriculture and communities.
But as the publication points out, GeoAI relies upon more than just technology — it requires trusted data, skilled professionals, ethical operational frameworks, and collaboration across sectors.
“GeoAI is not just about combining two technologies,” said Eino Yrjänäinen, GIS & AI specialist at the Location Innovation Hub. “It is about adding spatial and contextual information to AI and opening up new ways to understand complex systems and make better decisions.”
“This guide gives organisations a starting point for understanding the technology, exploring its potential, and putting it into practice.”
The 57-page digital publication covers topics such as:

- Trust, risks and regulation

It also provides advice on the best tools to use for a range of use cases.
The guide is based upon the ‘Location & AI: The Basics’ online course developed by the Location Innovation Hub in collaboration with the Open Geospatial Consortium. It does not require extensive prior knowledge of AI or GIS.
