Australian organisations are being given an opportunity to get a taste of what SouthPAN has to offer.

Geoscience Australia is giving businesses and other entities the chance to take part in hands-on trials of SouthPAN through its Device Loan Scheme.

The scheme will give participants an opportunity to see how enhanced positioning can boost their productivity and reduce their costs.

SouthPAN is a satellite-based augmentation system that acts to improve positioning accuracy over that which can be obtained solely from GNSS such as GPS.

The improvement can take measurement accuracy from five to 10 metres down to the sub-metre level.

SouthPAN signals are free to receive and do not require mobile telephone network coverage or internet connections.

How the Device Loan Scheme works

For a period of four weeks, participating businesses will be loaned a pre-configured SouthPAN-capable receiver (Geode, Astrix, Septentrio, GMV Magic UT).

Geoscience Australia’s Positioning Australia program will provide set-up guidance and technical support.

According to the agency, the program is open to Australian:

  • Industry users of positioning and geospatial data;
  • SMEs and innovators who are developing new services;
  • Local and state government organisations; and
  • Research and technical specialists.

Participants will be invited to share their feedback on the success of the scheme, and will be featured in short case studies shared through Geoscience Australia’s external communications channels.

Those interested in taking part should submit a short proposal outlining their intended use case and expected benefits. Email: PositioningAustralia@ga.gov.au.
