Back to basics: Pitney Bowes re-engineers MapInfo Pro for v17

By on 8 May, 2018

Latest version of legacy GIS suite features a streamlined UI, multi-resolution raster (MRR) support, and sweeping enhancements driven by a new strategy to harness user feedback.

After launching their Li360 online user community last year, GIS giant Pitney Bowes took the opportunity to engage more deeply with their user base, and find out what the users of their veteran GIS suite, MapInfo Pro, wanted for the next release. From this feedback, they based their newest release, version 17, around a complete redesign of the interface, aimed at providing an  uncluttered and streamlined experience.

“We launched MapInfo Pro over 30 years ago. In fact, it was the first Windows GIS product to hit the market. You can imagine just how many features have been added over three decades,” said Bob Guidotti, EVP and President of Pitney Bowes Software.

“We recognized our clients’ desire to get back to the basics, so we took proactive steps to evaluate how to deliver an optimal user experience. MapInfo Pro Version 17 is our response, and based on client response during extensive beta testing, we’re confident this technology is a game changer for the GIS community at large.”

Pitney Bowes outlines some of the key improvements in version 17 as:

  • Quick access tools that streamline the workflow for key product functions and deliver productivity gains
  • Access to value-added data through the Pitney Bowes Software and Data Marketplace
  • Integrated cloud services, such as geocoding and drive time calculations delivered by the Pitney Bowes Commerce Cloud
  • Access to the Li360 customer collaboration community

In developing this latest version of MapInfo Pro, the firm employed over 300 beta testers, who made over 100 suggested improvements, leading to 50 enhancements that made it to the final product. MapInfo Pro version 17 is available for a free 30-day trial.
