SKM 3D Laser Scanner

By on 15 June, 2010

A new 3D mobile laser scanner will be available through SKM. The Riegl VMX-250 scanner can be used for mapping roadways, rail corridors and waterways as well as urban areas. The system, which can be mounted on the roof of a vehicle, produces detailed 3D point cloud data.

The system can perform 600,000 time-of-flight measurements per second at traffic speeds and has a built-in analysis system that eliminates post-processing. The scanner comes with software and add-on suites for both AutoCAD and Microstation. Data captured by the scanner can be incorporated into existing design packages.

According to Leigh Finlay of SKM, the new scanner makes survey work safer, smarter and quicker.

“In the past, the survey of a particular piece of road or rail line took a great deal of time and involved significant safety risks,” he said. “This mobile laser scanner enables our teams to travel a route a few times, gather data and safely return to our offices to convert the point cloud data into a form that can be used by our engineers for our clients.”
