The VicRoads Open Data Site features more than 50 high-quality and publicly available datasets.

Transport systems will be made safer, easier and more efficient through the release of transport data from VicRoads via a new open data platform.

Developed by the Victorian road service, VicRoads, using smart mapping technology from Esri’s ArcGIS Platform, the VicRoads Open Data Site features more than 50 high-quality and publicly available previously unreleased datasets.

VicRoads Manager for Spatial Services Dr Hossein Parsa presented the new platform at last week’s OZRI conference, highlighting the possibilities that open access to the road authority’s data might bring, such as those developed during last month’s GeoNext Hackfest.

“The online community is constantly pushing the boundaries to develop clever transport outcomes and solutions,” Dr Parsa said. “By making data more accessible, we are providing even more opportunities to create innovative outcomes.

“Our platform provides easy access to a wealth of road and transport data, including traffic congestions, road incidents and crashes, and emergency road closures.

“Developers, data scientists, spatial specialists and the public are encouraged to explore the platform to build apps and tools to make travel easier and safer for all Victorians.”

Esri Australia transport specialist Evan Quick said the possibilities of map-based apps were endless when open data is combined with smart mapping technology.

“Apart from being a clever use of smart mapping technology, the VicRoads Open Data Site has set a high benchmark for other open data-based initiatives,” Mr Quick said.

“By having organisations like VicRoads support open data initiatives, the focus moves from fulfilling legislative obligations to making a real difference to the state’s road toll.

“We’re excited to share the work undertaken by VicRoads, as we know it will likely inspire a whole new generation of civic-developed apps that have the real potential to make our cities safer, cleaner and more sustainable.”

The Open Data Site forms part of the Victorian Government’s DataVic Access Policy and in conjunction with data.vic.gov.au, provides greater access to open data to benefit road users, increase mobility and provide better transport options for citizens.
