"This simulation is based on accurate spatial data produced by AAM but is for demonstration purposes only. AAM accepts no liability" – AAM
Last week AAM produced this video that simulates a 5.5-metre flood in Brisbane – the level the river was expected to peak at during floods – to help authorities plan their response. AAM also produced videos simulating a 3.5-metre flood and a 7-metre flood. The waters eventually peaked at around 4.5 metres.
The flood simulations were featured extensively on Australian and International media. The videos supplied residents, business owners and the public with realistic representations of the predicted flood event.
The flood simulation was based on accurate geospatial terrain data created by AAM, originally used to provided engineers and planners with 3D city models used in assessment and design tasks.
AAM General Manager, Brian Nicholls, says that he hopes that AAM's simulations help in some way to communicate the scale and extent of the flooding.
“We hope that the recent events in Queensland will prompt greater consideration to be given to high resolution mapping, which can then be used to help manage future flood events in many areas of Australia at risk," he said.
ESRI Australia has also produced a new map application showing the scope of flood response, including evacuation centres and accessible roads near Brisbane.
