Scan for victory

Highly accurate computer-generated 3D models are being used to help restore Admiral Nelson’s flagship HMS Victory.

Deri Jones & Associates and Geospatial Survey Solutions completed 17 high-resolution laser scans of the boat, each containing 40 million measurements. The scans recorded details of original features such as planking butts, iron eyes and rigging straps.

The scanned data was processed using Pointools software to compile both the short and long-range data with the total station measurements before being filtered and cleaned to ensure that only the required data was left in the point model.

The resulting 3D models will support ongoing restoration of the vessel by allowing for accurate reconstruction and relocation of fittings, rigging and planking.

Deri Jones & Associates and Geospatial Survey Solutions (DJA/GSS) have scanned the hulls and interiors of a number of naval vessels to help architects with refits and redesigns. A scan can usually be completed in under a day.
