IIC Technologies has partnered with Deakin University to run the IIC Academy’s S-5 Category B Hydrographic Surveyors course as a hybrid online/practical program.
The curriculum is recognised by the FIG/IHO/ICA International Board on Standards of Competence for Hydrographic Surveyors and Nautical Cartographers, and this will be the first time that such an accredited S-5B course has been offered to the public in Australasia.
The course is intended for those wishing to begin or augment a career in hydrographic surveying, and will comprise remote learning modules and on-site practical sessions.
The modules will cover:
- An introduction to hydrographic surveying
- Computation tools
- Nautical science
- Environment science
- Positioning
- Underwater acoustics
- QA and QC
- Remote sensing
- Hydrographic practice
- Hydrographic data management
- A comprehensive final field project
The comprehensive final field project will run for four weeks, during which the students must work as part of a team and employ the knowledge and skills learned to complete a small inshore survey.
Project tasks will include vessel mobilisation and calibrations, tide gauge and GNSS base station installations, acquisition of bathymetry, imagery, sound speed profiles and sediment samples.
The remote learning stage of the course will be conducted from September 2021 to January 2022, with the practical sessions and field project to take place in April 2022 at Deakin’s facilities in Warrnambool, Victoria.
