Queensland’s Department of Resources wants to attract and retain more women into the surveying profession, and is setting up a network/forum to further that aim.
Australia’s surveying sector already faces a critical shortage of surveyors, and the problem set to become worse, with thousands more surveyors needed over the next decade.
According to the Department, there is a very low participation rate for women in surveying, with only 3% of all surveyors registered with the Surveyors Board of Queensland being female.
The Department says it is committed to increasing the number of women in surveying in the state.
A key factor to addressing the issue is to ensure that female surveyors have strong support networks in place, where shared experiences can be discussed. Thus the Department is seeking to establish the network/forum in Queensland for women in surveying, with those of all levels and qualifications being welcome to join.
Initially the forum will be chaired by the Department’s Principal Surveyor, Jemma Picco.
The role and format of the forum will be decided at the first meeting, however the general purpose of the forum will be to encourage, discuss and resolve issues particular to women in surveying.
With diversity being linked to improved productivity and profitability, the Department is hoping that employers will encourage their staff to get involved.
