#Locate19 kicks off

By on 12 February, 2019

The geospatial behemoth of #Locate19 is finally upon us — don’t miss the highlights below to get the most out of the experience.

I hope you’ve been planning and doing your stretches, because there’s more on at #Locate19 than one can reasonably manage, in six streams over three very massive days.

The program kicks off at a relatively relaxed pace today with the Market Day and activities to launch ‘The Hub’ — n unconference and collaborative space for more intimate engagement and networking opportunities that builds on the Interaction Zone concept at Locate18 — with a diverse and engaging set of topics and discussions to get involved in.

A session on the young professionals representing the future of our industry and a special Locate session of Georabble taking place from 17:30 to 19:00 are highlights of The Hub’s program on the opening day.

The opportunity to consult with an expert at the free Market Day is of course the other main event of Monday, with a broad range of specialist exhibitors and academics all under the one roof, just waiting for a valuable new connection or conversation that might be very expensive to organise otherwise.

Tuesday opens the program in earnest, with a Welcome to Country ceremony, SIBA|GITA breakfast and plenary sessions rounding out the morning.

Two tours of VXLab, the multidisciplinary virtual laboratory collaboration between RMIT and industry, will be taking place over the course of #Locate19. Register to get involved and explore the capabilities of this unique space and exciting project, covering collaborative experimental design, and the operation and testing of global cyber-physical systems.

Firing on all cylinders after lunch, all six streams open concurrently. The ‘Surveying in a digital world’ track will cover everything from quality assurance with multibeam data, to maintaining an ethical standard of practice in an age of disruption.

Five simultaneous sessions in the ‘Advanced agriculture’ track will work through themes as diverse as mainstreaming of precision agriculture techniques, to reusing mining exploration data to assess land suitability, with public infrastructure, smart transport and infrastructure assets, utility management and urban planning and smart city tech all boasting similarly full schedules.

Not to be missed on Tuesday afternoon is the Advancing’s Australia’s Space and Spatial Capability panel at 4:40pm, featuring Ross Caldow of HERE, Julia Mitchell of FrontierSI, Michelle Gee of RMIT and Aude Vignelles of the Australian Space Agency.

Tuesday’s highlight is undoubtedly the regional Asia-Pacific Spatial Excellence Awards dinner , which will fill the evening program from 7pm — don’t miss this opportunity to see whose efforts and innovations will be rewarded, and get an inside line on the up-and-comers that will be leading the charge in coming years.

From there it’s a race to the finish with a full day’s programming across six streams until closing plenaries following afternoon tea. A spectrum of sessions exploring ‘Geospatial technologies driving our digital future’, the latest initiatives in ‘Technology and data to protect our environment for future generations’ round out a colossal program of presentations.

Go and explore the full program in detail, and see you at #Locate19!
