Mobile location-based service revenues in Europe are forecast to reach €420 million (AUS $606 million) in 2015, up from €220 million (AUS $317 million) last year, according to new report.

The report from market research firm Berg Insight predicts that local search, navigation services and social networking will become the top applications for mobile users. It estimates that by 2015, one third of all mobile subscribers in Europe will use some kind of location-enhanced application on a regular basis.

“The installed base of GPS handsets in Europe has recently surpassed 15 per cent of total handsets and will increase to 50 per cent three years from now,” Berg Insight senior analyst André Malm has predicted.

The report also notes that the revenue model for many mobile applications in the consumer segment is shifting from premium fees to ad-funding, especially for location-based services.
