With the 2013 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium less than two months away (July 21-26), now is the time to register. This year’s global summit will showcase world-leading research with over 1,800 papers and posters.

The conference is the flagship of the IEEE – the world’s largest professional association for the advancement of technology. Bringing IGARSS to Asia-Pacific recognises the growth in remote sensing in our region. The ideas, networking and opportunities formed at this conference will make a significant contribution to our future.

Be sure to catch Senator Kate Lundy MP, Australia’s lead Minister for Space, opening the conference, as she discusses Australia’s new Satellite Utilisation Policy. China’s Professor Guo Huadong will outline China’s latest developments in his keynote address. Dr Chris Pigram will showcase some of Australia’s latest developments in remote sensing applications. IEEE President Dr. Peter Staecker and GRSS President Professor Melba Crawford will paint the global picture. Professor Mike Goodchild will challenge us with his thoughts on the changing relationship between traditional GIS science and remote sensing. Dr Rob Vertessy has some fascinating observations to make about the evolving developments in meteorology.

Details of all keynote speaker can be found here.

The conference speakers will focus on “Building a Sustainable Earth through Remote Sensing”. The key topics focus on the latest developments in satellite and airborne systems for:

  • Analysis Techniques and studies of Atmosphere, Cryosphere, Oceans and Land, forests
  • Sensors and Platforms
  • Data Management, Dissemination Education and Policy
  • Disasters, hazards, earthquakes
  • Data Assimilation
  • Emerging Space Programs
  • Data Fusion and Integration
  • In situ Observation and Data Scaling
  • Advances in Analysis Techniques
  • And much more

More details of the program can be found here.

The conference will also feature a comprehensive summer school and a great selection of tutorials.

The Summer School will be hosted by RMIT University (July 18-19). Expert speakers will cover airborne LiDAR, multi-temporal image analysis, hyperspectral image processing, thematic mapping from SAR imagery, and calibration of airborne radar. The summer school places are limited, so ensure that you secure your spot soon! A comprehensive list of presenters can be found here.

The tutorials program is packed with exciting topics. Some of the topics include; advanced classification techniques, earth observation data mining, predictive models of light interaction, 3D and 4D SAR tomography and much more, all of which can be found here.

IGARSS will also allow attendees to interact with dozens of exhibitors including Geoscience Australia, CRCSI, Headwall Photonics, HyVista, IEEE GRSS, Spatial Scientific, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, Rapid Eye and so much more.

If your organisation would like to exhibit, relevant information can be found here. There are still some excellent sponsorship opportunities available. Details of which can be found here.

Additionally, the social program promises to be very exciting. Perhaps you would like to compete in the prestigious annual IGARSS Soccer World Cup? Maybe you have a keen eye for creatures of the sea, if so you can visit the Melbourne Aquarium and enjoy a delicious meal as well? You may be interested in a fascinating day touring communities deeply affected by the 2009 Black Saturday forest fires, hosted by Victoria’s former chief forest fire officer.

The Symposium Dinner is being held at the iconic Plaza Ballroom. Situated in Melbourne’s famous Regent Theatre, the prestigious Ballroom is reminiscent of the grand European ballrooms of the 19th century. This venue offers a unique snapshot of Melbourne in days gone by.

It is all there and much more, so be sure to check out what IGARSS can offer you.
