The Michelle Grose Memorial Scholarship has been launched to honour a trailblazing surveyor and inspire the next generation of professionals.

Over a career spanning more than three decades, Michelle Grose (who passed away in 2025) worked on some of the nation’s most significant infrastructure projects, from tunnels and bridges to mines, pipelines, pump stations and major transport networks.

At a time when women on civil construction sites were uncommon, she built an extraordinary career through skill, perseverance and a genuine love of her craft.

“Michelle was a pioneer, trailblazer, mentor, and one of the most respected surveyors in Australia’s civil construction industry,” said Chris Staak, State Manager with ESO Surveyors.

“Early in her career, Michelle spoke and wrote about the need for greater diversity within the construction industry,” he added.

“Long before diversity and inclusion became industry priorities, she recognised the importance of creating pathways for more women to enter and thrive in the profession.”

Continuing the commitment to helping others

The aim of the Michelle Grose Memorial Scholarship is to support the next generation of female surveyors while preserving the legacy of a woman who helped change the industry by showing what was possible.

Members of the industry are being asked to contribute toward the establishment of the scholarship, by making a donation. A fundraising goal of $100,000 has been set.

The funds raised will be used to raise a student scholarship in the amount of $10,000 in Year One and $10,000 in Year Two.

“Every dollar raised will help create opportunities for aspiring women entering the profession Michelle loved so much,” said Staak.

Staak adds that while the scholarship is focused on supporting women in surveying, Michelle’s generosity was not limited to a single cause.

“Shortly before her passing, Michelle played a leading role in raising more than $10,000 for Movember and men’s mental health, personally contributing significantly to the campaign’s success and earning recognition as its leading fundraiser,” he said.

“Her commitment to helping others reflected the person she was: compassionate, generous, and driven by a genuine desire to make the world a better place.”

“Today, we invite our industry, our colleagues, our friends and everyone whose life was touched by Michelle to help continue her legacy,” Staak added.
