For all the Minecraft geeks out there, it’s now possible to export Esri GIS data to the popular game – with potential uses for planning. James Fee has the skinny from the recent Esri UC in the states.

 

I know it’s a little silly to laugh at place names, but I couldn’t help but giggle when I read the map of Shetland and Orkney placenames that Ralph Straumann posted. I want to visit the Gump of Spurness, and hear how they speak in Tongue of Gangsta.

 

Between the Poles has a post outlining just some of the countries in the world that are mandating Building Information Modelling. Australia is notably absent. Does anyone know what we’re doing in this field?

 

LiDAR News has a post showing off DARPA’s latest terminator-like robot, which uses LiDAR for its vision. 6’2”, 150kg, lasers for eyes… we’re all doomed.

 

Speaking of death and lasers, Red Orbit reports that Richard III’s grave is being laser scanned by a postgraduate student. The grave was only discovered last year, hiding under a carpark.

 

California’s highest court, the Supreme Court, has ruled that GIS data are public record. This ruling is being hailed as a victory for public access to government GIS databases and for more government transparency with its maps. Wondering what ramifications this news may have in Australia?
