Industry members are being urged to take part in a survey to help gather data to address the lack of women in the profession.

It is well known that women are still grossly under-represented in surveying, at a time when the industry needs more professionals than ever before.

The big question is, why are there not more women in the sector?

A newly launched initiative from Surveyors Australia — the Women in Surveying National Study — aims to answer that question.

Going beyond diversity index research, it is hoped that the study will provide a more detailed and current picture of women’s participation and experiences across the surveying profession.

According to the CEO of Surveyors Australia, Michelle Blicavs, “The study will establish a national benchmark of women working across the profession, including surveyors, technicians, drafters, spatial professionals, planners, educators, business leaders and those working in the many roles that support our profession”.

“Where are women working across the profession? What brought them here? What helps them build successful careers? Where do they encounter barriers? Why do some leave? And importantly, what are we already doing well that we should build upon?

“We need current, detailed evidence to complement the research already undertaken, including previous diversity index work,” she added.

The research has been made possible with the support of AusSearch and The Surveyors Trust. It is being conducted by Survey Matters, Surveyors Australia’s independent research partner, to ensure responses remain confidential and the findings provide robust, evidence-based insights.

You can take part in the Study by completing the online survey.

Every view is valued

Blicavs points out that the Women in Surveying National Study is not just looking for input from women.

“We want to hear from men too,” she said.

“Understanding the experiences of people across the profession will allow us to see where experiences differ, where they are shared, and whether the challenges we identify are specific to women or reflect broader workforce issues.”

Overall, the research aims to help the industry understand:

  • How people find their way into surveying
  • Where women are working and the roles they hold
  • What supports career progression and leadership
  • What makes people want to stay
  • Why people consider leaving, or do leave
  • What employers are already doing successfully
  • Where industry action could make the greatest difference.

“Most importantly, the findings will give us a clear baseline,” said Blicavs.

“Rather than simply saying we need more women in surveying, we will have current evidence to guide what we do next and a benchmark against which we can measure progress over time.”

A separate survey has been distributed to business owners and managers to capture workforce data and employer practices. Anyone in that category who has not received the survey notification can contact Surveyors Australia to be included.
