PPK georeferencing for UAVs: now without base stations

By on 30 May, 2018

A new post processed kinematic (PPK) direct georeferencing system for UAVs has been announced by Hexagon and Klau Geomatics.

The new system requires no local GPS receiver, and features pre-calibrated cameras in a package for DJI drones, with the manufacturers claiming that their solution can reduce achieve side overlap as low as 40 percent. Combined with position and altitude data, this is claimed to contribute to streamlined triangulation and swift processing of the captured data into 3D models.

“In addition to accuracy, which is the most important feature of our georeferencing solution, is the simplified and efficient workflow. Users don’t need any survey equipment to place Ground Control Points (GCPs) or even a local base station for their PPK. They can collect precise georeferenced UAV data and even capture ground check points just using their UAV,” said Adam Chabok, technical director of Klau Geomatics.

“With the unique, simplified plug and play payload, the system can be easily attached to any UAV or manned aircraft.”

The manufacturers claim that external coordinate conversion software is not needed with their solution, and it is compatible with all global and local systems and datums. The Hexagon/Klau Geomatics PPK direct georeferencing system for UAVs is currently available in Australia and Europe, with a release in North America to follow.
