Did you know that they world population is now 7 billion? The historic milestone has either just been reached, or will be reached by the month’s end (depending on who you ask). Spatial Sustain has a post that shows a map that SAP and the United Nations Population fund have put together that examines the world population, including information on births, deaths and growth rate, as well as demographic details on youth, children and seniors.

The Australian (not a blog, I know) has an article on ETSA (the South Australian energy utility) having created a ‘cloud-based’ fault reporting system that allows customers to log faults using a map interface.

NZ Resources has a post that points out that GNS Science made an application to the government to map unknown faults in Canterbury, before the February 2011 earthquake, however, they received no response.

Spatial Vision has put together a roundup on the InterGeo 2011 conference that was held in Nuremberg last month, including the author’s take on 3D visualisation, data collection vehicles and open GIS.

GIS Café has put together a post on crowdsourcing (in case you’re not sick to death of that term yet), including an overview of some interesting non-spatial projects, including translating the Dead Sea Scrolls, solving a protein problem related to AIDs, and sifting through data from NASA’s Hubble telescope.

Cartogrammer has just returned home from the North American Cartographic Information Society Conference, in Madison, Wisconsin, and has put together a great overview of the event that should be of interest to any cartographers out there.

And, finally, Google Maps Mania has a post showing a video of the Google Street View trike, as strapped to the front of a Swiss locomotive. This has been done to capture the UNESCO-recognised Rhaetian Railway.
