Spatial Snippets for Wednesday, 19 August

A weekly round-up of all the geospatial news that didn’t make it into our normal daily coverage.

Our Spatial Snippets this week is all about jobs. We keep an eye out for vacancies all the time, and there seem to have been quite a lot of geospatial positions becoming available in recent weeks. And covering a wide variety of roles, too.

Hopefully this is a good sign that geospatial technologies and methodologies are becoming more and more embedded and valued within our society.

So here are this week’s job vacancies.

Starting in NSW, the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water has several positions going. The first is for a Technical Services Officer to join the NSW Biodiversity Conservation Trust and use their spatial and data skills to contribution to private land conservation. Applications close today, 19 August.

The second job vacancy is for a Remote Sensing Scientist to join the Science and Insights team and contribute to the delivery of some of NSW’s most significant land and vegetation monitoring programs. Applications close on 24 August.

The third opening is for a Project Officer – Spatial to join the Ecosystem Restoration team in the Ecosystems and Threatened Species branch, where the successful applicant will  support data processing and management, computer-based mapping and spatial analysis that translates complex ecological data into insights. Applications close on 24 August.

And the fourth job vacancy in the Department is for a Senior Ecohydrologist to join the Water for the Environment branch and support the delivery of environmental water programs by undertaking advanced ecohydrological and spatial data analysis and ecological response modelling. Demonstrated expertise in GIS and spatial analysis is required. Applications close on 30 August.

Transport for NSW has two jobs going. The first is for a Survey Manager – North (Grafton), whose duties will include leading the development and deployment of surveying capability across the region, and providing expert technical advice to project teams. Applications close on 24 August.

And the second job vacancy is for a Road Safety Analyst, a role for which conducting spatial and data analysis is a key part. Applications close on 23 August.

The NSW Environment Protection Authority is looking for a Geospatial Services Lead to lead a specialist team to uplift enterprise-wide spatial services, embed contemporary geospatial practices, and drive real organisational change by making location intelligence more accessible, trusted and valuable. Applications close on 20 August.

The NSW National Parks & Wildlife Service has an opening in Coffs Harbour for a Project Officer Threatened Species, a role that requires GIS and analytical skills as well as ecological knowledge. Applications close on 23 August.

And Lake Macquarie City Council needs an experienced GIS Specialist to join its Information Technology department to develop modern GIS applications, and streamline processes and workflows through automation. Applications close on 23 August.

In the ACT, the ACT Government’s Biosecurity and Rural Services team is looking for a skilled Biosecurity and Geospatial Analyst Officer to play a key role in developing and maintaining the spatial data systems that underpin biosecurity surveillance, emergency response, rural land management and invasive species programs across the Territory.

In Queensland, the Department of Transport and Main Roads is seeking a Director (Digital Railways) to lead the digital transformation of Queensland’s major rail infrastructure program and drive the integration of digital engineering, BIM, geospatial technologies, data analytics and automation across a portfolio of rail projects. Applications close on 1 September.

The same Department is offering full-time and part-time cadetships across a range of roles, including spatial science officer. Full details of eligibility and requirements are available on the Department’s cadetship web page.

The Queensland Department of Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation has a vacancy for a Senior Spatial Systems Developer to join the Information & Digital Science Delivery team and help streamline its bespoke spatial reporting platform. Applications close on 27 August.

In Victoria, the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action is looking for a GIS Officer to support delivery of high-quality GIS and mapping services for the Planning and Authorisations Group. The role will involve maintaining the quality, accuracy and currency of spatial datasets and working collaboratively with business units within Bushfire Forest Services to deliver the spatial needs of their program areas. Applications close on 26 August.

The same Department is seeking a Principal Software Engineer with a passion for web mapping and web apps, extensive spatial experience and knowledge of a variety of software packages. Applications close on 23 August.

Finally, Victoria’s Department of Transport and Planning needs a Spatial Data Editor to support the maintenance and accuracy of Vicmap Planning, Victoria’s authoritative planning scheme mapping database. Applications close 26 August.
