Bakosurtanal, Indonesia’s coordinating agency for survey and mapping, recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Ministry of Environment in an effort to maximise the use of geospatial information for the protection and conservation of the environment.
The agreement aims to strengthen collaboration between the Ministry of Environment and Bakosurtanal, in order to use geospatial information for environmental protection and management.
The signing of the MOU occurred during the launch of the National EcoRegion, an initiative designed to make development and space allocation plans compatible with environmental considerations.
EcoRegion defines geographic areas that have specific climatic, soil, and water characteristics, native flora and fauna, as well as patterns of human interaction with nature that ‘describe the integrity of natural systems and the environment.’
The establishment of the National EcoRegion serves as a basis for setting EcoRegions in order to identify potential problems and areas that need to be considered in the preparation of the Plan of Protection and Environmental Management
During the event, Asep Karsidi, Head of Bakosurtanal, said his office will be providing the National EcoRegion Map that will be used to monitor and preserve forests in Indonesia.
