The Philippines is about to undertake a unified mapping project that will update its topographic maps, and create a more detailed 1:10,000 map series for approximately 50 per cent of the country’s land mass.
Usually, different government agencies in the Philippines undertake their own mapping and GIS initiatives, but this initiative will pool funds from the different agencies in order to purchase the required satellite and aerial imagery.
According to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), the government uses spatial data for legislation, policy development, management of resources, environment protection, urban planning, and disaster management, among others.
The project will be coordinated by the National Mapping and Resource Information Authority which is part of the DENR.
