Smart motorways utilise complementary technologies to create a fully managed road environment that maximises the performance of the existing road infrastructure.

The M4 Smart Motorway will deliver the necessary Intelligent Transport System (ITS) functions, applications, infrastructure, operational and support procedures that enable upstream demand and operations to be managed to meet downstream capacity along a motorway in real time, whilst considering corridor operations.

A key outcome of the project will be the design and procurement of a motorway management system (MMS) which will provide the control functionality to integrate and coordinate the ITS to monitor, provide intelligence and control to the road network, easing congestion and keeping traffic flowing for safer and more reliable road journeys.

RMS is looking for a cutting edge innovative solution that is applicable today and into the future. Any viable innovation suggested by proponents will be considered.
