Surveyors federation lays out goals

The International Federation of Surveyors has outlined a number of key factors for the development of the industry as a result of its conference in Sydney earlier this year.

The federation says in a summary document that accurate land information and good land governance are important tools in meeting the key challenges of the 21st century such as climate change, natural disasters, environmental degradation, rapid urban growth, and poverty eradication.

To meet these goals the global industry must foster good education and training, alongside structured professional development and ethics. Ongoing engagement with national member associations and regional structures and organisations is also important

Continuing partnership with UN agencies such as FAO, UN-HABITAT, UN-OOSA, and the World Bank, as well as sister organisations within the Joint Board of Geospatial Information Societies will help co-ordinate the development of the industry globally.

The document notes a range of scientific, technological and practical developments reported during the sessions, including great progress in the use of GPS, significant technological developments in surveying and mapping tools, the emerging concept of a spatially-enabled society, and the increasing role of land professionals towards sustainable cities.
