The Geospatial Council of Australia (GCA) has announced the appointment of Stewart Dunne, former Hydrographer of Australia, as its new Independent Non-Executive Director.

Commissioned into the Royal Australian Navy in 1990, Dunne’s journey into the geospatial industry began as a hydrographic surveyor. Over the course of 34 years, he gained extensive experience in command, operations, training and capability development.

Dunne’s career took him to remote areas, both domestically and overseas, and earned him leadership roles at the Australian Hydrographic Office in Wollongong, where he served as the Hydrographer of Australia, and as the Chair of the Australasian Hydrographic Surveyors Certification Panel.

Dunne says he envisions GCA emerging as the trusted voice of Australia’s geospatial industry, fostering inclusivity and innovation through focused advocacy, education, and advice.

“I am honoured to join GCA’s Board during this transformative period. Having spent over three decades in the maritime sector, I am eager to contribute to the geospatial industry’s future trajectory,” he said.

“GCA’s vision, particularly its emphasis on community and advocacy, resonates with my values. I am committed to working collaboratively with industry stakeholders to strengthen the foundation of the geospatial sector and promote its significance in various disciplines.”

“We are delighted to have Stewart join the GCA Board,” added Kate Lundy, Chair/President of GCA.

“His remarkable career in hydrography, leadership roles in the Australian Defence Force, and commitment to advocacy, align perfectly with the GCA’s mission. Stewart brings invaluable insights that will contribute to the growth and innovation of the geospatial sector.”
