SSSC2013 held in Canberra from 15 – 19 April, provided a balance of practical and technical workshops and conference sessions. The aim was to arm attendees with a “take away” kit of new and innovative approaches, techniques, and tricks to assist in their work and future planning. The concurrent sessions allowed delegates to tailor a program to suit their needs with the variety of topics and activities providing more than some delegates were expecting.

Relationships and partnerships were strengthened as delegates had the opportunity to network throughout the week. They shared their challenges, often with the relief of being offered an alternative action plan. Value was created for the industry through innovative and challenging sessions, and the thought provoking discussions that resonated.

“SSSC2013 was a vibrant, well-organised conference with an entertaining selection of speakers and activities. We learnt about spatial issues in emergency management, how not-for-profit groups are coming to rely on spatial information and gained many insights into all sorts of spatial applications in a wide range of fields.” – Shona Chisholm, business development manager, Geoimage Pty Ltd

“SSSC was an opportunity to network with local, national and international like-minded people. It was great to catch up with friends, colleagues and peers.” – Alex Cowdery, business manager, AAM

For those that missed the conference, a snapshot seminar offering an overview and some of the presentations from SSSC2013 will be held in Sydney on Tuesday, 21 May 2013 from 5.30pm – 9.00pm at The York Conference and Function Centre.

Thanks to the sponsors

DigitalGlobe proved that lanyard sponsorship is definitely a winner – their new brand appeared around everyone’s necks including our presenters! Land Surveys’ internet café was a cool and calm centre for delegates to quietly check their email, hold small meetings and take time out. We were gasping for the opening of the barista on Wednesday morning – thanks to Trimble we had caffeine shots on demand – lovely!

CR Kennedy supported the YP Project by providing the instruments required while Curtin University sponsored the day-long event. We also thank CR Kennedy for sponsoring the Conference Compendium, USB drives, and program handout.

WALIS showed their support of the future of Spatial in sponsoring the Undergraduate Student Award and Whelans sponsored the Scrivener’s Breakfast – a lovely morning with an enthusiastic turnout! Attendees were also pleased that it was Thursday, not Friday – when there was definitely snow on the mountains!

Our exhibitors’ key innovations on show

AAM and Vekta announced that they have combined to create a leading geospatial solutions company. The company will operate under the AAM brand and continue to invest in the Geospatial Industry. Through the merger AAM has further increased its capacity to service all geospatial needs in Australia, New Zealand, Asia and Africa.

DigitalGlobe’s support of the SSSC provided the opportunity to introduce: Global Basemap as the first complete high resolution coverage of Australia and New Zealand, FirstLook as the first commercial app which relays images from satellite to the Emergency Responder within hours of collection, and the improved services which leverage off the recent combinations of DigitalGlobe and Tomnod. A conference highlight was the selection of FirstLook as both category winner and people’s choice awards for the SSSC2013 Map Competition.

1Spatial showcased its new data management environment, which provides a suite of products to efficiently and consistently plan, maintain and publish your data, whilst also automating your production workflows. The 1Spatial Management Suite is built from 1Spatial’s high-performance products and is underpinned by enterprise database and Service Oriented Architecture technology from industry leaders such as Oracle. If you missed Brett and his team or would like more information please get in touch and emailinfo@1spatial.com

Many of the latest developments in surveying and spatial technology were unveiled at SSSC, including: the launch of a keystone piece of industry research by SSSI and Esri Australia; and demonstrations of the most advanced and user-friendly imagery software to hit Australian shores, ENVI.

The 2013 GIS in Local Government Benchmark Study was launched at SSSC, in a presentation led by Esri Australia’s Gary Johnson. Mr Johnson said there were many interesting findings from the Study, particularly the statistics which indicated councils see GIS technology as the key to better communication with the public.

The most advanced and user-friendly imagery software on the market – ENVI – was also on-show, with Esri Australia providing demonstrations of the imagery solution on their conference stand. ENVI compiles and analyses data captured from remote sensors and transforms it into a powerful visualisation of a situation.

Hi-Target Surveying Instrument Co (No1 in China’s GNSS Industry) showcased the focus of their business – RTK system, GIS collectors, Marine surveying instruments, CORS system as well as their total stations.

CHC Navigation, China, has entered into a supplier agreement with Hungary-based DigiTerra Information Services. So, DigiTerra Explorer mobile GIS and mapping software is now available pre-installed on CHC LT30 and LT400 handheld GPS/GIS receivers offering GIS data collection and maintenance solutions for GIS professionals. Great news!

Focused on GIS and data analysis, Intergraph in conjunction with Leica Geosystems and Hexagon held live demonstrations on their products, solutions and services at their booth. ERDAS IMAGINE, GeoMedia, GeoMedia SmartClient, Apollo, and LPS were the most popular demos held.

Mike Lane (Intergraph) led a workshop on Using Point Cloud Data where she elucidated how the technology can help leverage LiDAR and software-synthesized point clouds for classification, feature extraction, change detection, and creating info-clouds.

Defkalion Kalogridis’s presentation on the INSPIRE initiative in Greece highlighted the importance on having an Open, Interoperable, OGC-compliant and web-based Spatial Data Infrastructure. The discussion moved to how the implementation of SDI in Europe can help Australia in a similar implementation at state level.

GlobalPOS were focusing on Javad’s new Triumph VS – a new style high performance fully integrated controller, receiver & antenna. GlobalPOS are suppliers of high performance GNSS Equipment – if you would like to see more on the Triumph VS or other GNSS products please visit www.globalpos.com.au

Umwelt illustrated their ability to handle and interrogate extremely large volumes of spatial data and to find small signals within the ‘noise’, using its own specialised database schemas and software. They also gave a presentation about the specific case study of finding malleefowl (a protected species) mounds using LiDAR data.

SSSC2013 – our Industry Leaders and Supporters

The conference just would not have been possible without the support of our exhibitor and sponsorship partners. A huge vote of thanks goes to all those who supported and participated. We look forward to seeing you involved at Locate14, the combined Spatial@Gov/SIBA and SSSC conference planned for early April 2014.
