The SSSC 2013 conference aims to focus on all five of the commissions’ interests – covering technological advances, new uses via interesting case studies as well as those future innovations still in the lab. Some highlights for Hydrography include:
Airborne and bathymetric LiDAR – a hot topic for Hydrography, with presentations on adjustments of broad area airborne surveying, multi beam processing, developments in mobile mapping and the use of 3D Data. The conference will also include case studies and research from Fugro LADS.
The pre-conference workshops will feature a unique Caris workshop on how to take your acquired hydrographic survey data from “Ping” to the final product – “Chart”.
On Thursday 18 April at 13:30-14:30, relevant keynote addresses will be given by:
- Simon Ironside, Hydrography Commission chair – an update of Commission activities, relationship with FIG Commission 4 and more.
- Cdre Brett Brace RAN – hydrographer of Australia – his plans for hydrography in Australia and the importance of hydrographic standards to an island nation.
- Commander Dave Crossman RNZN – what’s happening in NZ and reporting on behalf of the Chairman of the Australasian Hydrographic Society on AHS activities
- Stuart Caie, Land Information NZ, who will present two papers – focusing on the current plans within South Pacific and the future of Hydrography.
Case studies of great interest include: Advances in GIS Mapping of Waterways, Bruce Harris BMT WBM; and A Spatial and Web Enablement of Australia’s Groundwater Dependent Ecosystems (GDE), Zaffar Sadiq Mohamed-Ghouse, SKM.
Of interest to all is the Next Generation Datum Panel, which will analyse reforms required in infrastructure and data sets to provide centimetre quality results.
These are just a small selection of the topics on offer at the conference; a full overview is available on the SSSC 2013 website.
