The annual spatial@gov conference, the only geospatial event organised in conjunction with the peak organisations in Australia and New Zealand representing the public, private, research and professional sectors of the spatial community, has now finished for another year.
Themes for this year included: water security; spatial@defence; government spatial activities in other countries; access to government spatial information; emergency response; and the spatial framework for virtual Australia.
Presentations during the plenary sessions informed attendees about: national spatial data developments; the role of spatial information in government; geospatial capabilities & disaster resilience; the importance of spatial data in Australia’s future; the benefits of public access to spatial data; the use of spatial data in regional policy development; building smart connections; and a vision for a virtual Australia.
Vendors on the floor were showing the latest tech in flood modelling, asset capture, aerial and ground surveying, GIS and spatial data management software – both vendor-created and open source – and more.
The gala dinner also played host to the Asia-Pacific Spatial Excellence Awards (APSEA) Industry 2011. Results of which are included in this mail out.
All in all, it was a rewarding time, and a great chance to catch up with some familiar faces, meet some new ones, learn about the latest technology and initiatives, and, of course, see where spatial is heading in government.
