A weekly round-up of all the geospatial news that didn’t make it into our normal daily coverage.

If you have a Spatial Snippet to share with our readers, please send us an email.

Let’s start off as usual with some geospatial job vacancies that we’ve spotted over the past week.

In Victoria, the Department of Transport and Planning is looking for a Senior Data Scientist to use data analysis, statistics and machine learning to help solve complex business problems and support better decision-making. Demonstrated experience of working with large and complex datasets and tools such as GIS, is required. Applications close on 11 June.

The Victorian Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action has two software jobs up for grabs. The first is for a Senior Software Engineer and the other is for a Principal Software Engineer. In each case, familiarity with GIS packages is either required or highly desirable. Applications for both jobs close on 11 June.

In Queensland, the Department of Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation is seeking a Senior Project Officer – Planning to help contribute to the long-term sustainability and conservation of protected area natural and cultural values by helping guide the implementation of the Department’s Values-based Management Framework across south-east Queensland. GIS skills would be highly regarded. Applications close on 4 June.

Queensland’s Department of Transport and Main Roads needs a Senior Geospatial Science Officer to join the Rail Division’s Rail Infrastructure Delivery Office (RIDO) and contribute to delivering a multi-billion-dollar program of rail projects. Applications close on 9 June.

The same department is also still seeking a Surveyor, to be based in Townsville and engage in engineering survey projects and provide expert advice while contributing to the planning, design and management of Queensland’s road network. Applications close on 15 June.

In NSW, the Greater Western Sydney Advocacy Network is seeking GIS Planning Research Volunteers to support a growing range of advocacy, research and community-focused projects across Greater Western Sydney. This role is suited for those interested in combining spatial analysis, urban planning, research and storytelling to help support more equitable, evidence-based and people-focused planning outcomes. Key duties might include assisting with GIS mapping and spatial analysis, supporting research and data collection, and preparing maps, diagrams and visual content.

NSW Public Works is looking for a Spatial Officer to join its Spatial Team, to be responsible for the production of various spatial products using 2D and 3D GIS to support the delivery of major government infrastructure projects. Applications close on 14 June.

The NSW Rural Fire Service has an opening for an Operational Officer to take part in a broad range of services in a team environment that lead to better protection of the community from bush fires and other emergencies. Experience in the use of environmental assessments, spatial data and mapping systems will be highly regarded. Applications close on 15 June.

And in the ACT, the Office of Nature Conservation is seeking an Ecologist to support the Urban Ecology Team by applying spatial and statistical approaches to identify and protect important biodiversity values now and into the future. The role involves desktop analysis of biodiversity data using GIS, R, and Python. This is a temporary position available immediately until December 2026 under a merit pool system.

Events, awards and other news

Moving on to other news, don’t forget that the abstract application deadline for the Locate26 Conference/Digital Earth Summit is coming up on 30 June. So, now’s the time to put your thinking cap on and come up with a fabulous abstract proposal that will wow the selection committee. Head to the event website for full details.

Even closer is the abstract proposal deadline for the Spatial Information Day 2026 (SID2026) conference in Adelaide in August. Applications close this coming Friday, 5 June, so if you’re hoping to present at the event, don’t delay — get that application in.

Still on the topic of SID2026, it has been announced that the inaugural South Australian EISSI Awards will be presented at a gala dinner the night after the conference. The deadline for award nominations is Friday, 19 June, so there’s not much time left.

And as if that’s not enough, the awards ceremony will now incorporate the South Australian Geospatial Excellence (SAGE) Awards, to be delivered in collaboration with the South Australian Geospatial Alliance. Full details are not yet available, but we’ll bring you the news as soon as we hear about it. And incidentally, SAGE’s next social night will be held on Thursday, 16 July at the Cathedral Hotel in Adelaide.

DCS Spatial Services has appointed Vittorio Sussanna (see photo, top of page) as New South Wales’ new Deputy Surveyor-General, a role which he will tackle concurrently with his current role as Associate Director, Survey. According to DCS Spatial Services, “The reinstatement of the Deputy Surveyor-General title provides greater clarity for industry stakeholders. This role will help strengthen coordination across the profession and support consistent standards in NSW.”

Also in NSW, there has been a major revision of Surveyor-General’s Direction No. 13 – Aquaculture Lease Surveys, to align it with the Surveying and Spatial Information Regulation 2024 and provide clearer guidance on preparing and registering aquaculture lease survey plans.
