Queensland surveyors to make final switch to Medjil

The latest Queensland lands surveying alert has been issued, reminding everyone of the changeover from Baseline to Medjil.

Both the legacy Baseline and newer Medjil are software platforms used in the calibration of surveying devices using electronic distance measuring equipment (EDME).

After many years of use, and after 12 months of dual access, Baseline is now making way for Medjil, with the final changeover to occur in August.

Medjil was developed by Landgate in Western Australia and has become a new standard for calibration via EDME. Highly regarded, its development led to Landgate being awarded the Highly Commended, Extra Dimension & Innovation gong at last year’s EISSI Awards.

Making the switch to Medjil

The Department of Natural Resources and Mines, Manufacturing and Regional and Rural Development has published two training videos to help surveyors make the switch from Baseline to Medjil.

As we reported earlier this year, all Queensland surveyors are required to regularly test their surveying equipment — at least once every 12 months — to ensure it is in proper working order.

With regard to that, the Department has notified that the two-yearly recertification of southern Queensland electronic distance measuring baselines will take place in August and September.

The baselines involved this time are those at Caboolture, Childers, Gold Coast, Leyburn and Tungamull.

Surveyors are being encouraged to postpone, when possible, the use of these baselines until the recertification process is finished.

Water Boundary Guidance

The Department has also announced the publication of Water Boundary Guidance to help Queensland surveyors who are involved in surveying tidal and non-tidal water feature boundaries.

According to the Department, “This material aims to support a consistent statewide approach to interpret and identify the location of tidal and non-tidal boundaries, based on the feature-based methodology given under Part 7 of the Survey and Mapping Infrastructure Act 2003 (SMI Act) and the Cadastral Survey Requirements (CSR).”

“It explains some of the key concepts relevant to the survey of water boundaries in Queensland and provides examples and case studies for commonly applied requirements of the SMI Act and the CSR.”
