The Pacific Islands Geographical Information Systems/Remote Sensing Conference has attracted participants from around the Pacific Islands since 1999. In 2016 the conference will take place over four days from 28 November – 1 December, in Suva, Fiji. This year’s theme will be “Improved Data – Improved Maps”. Following on from the devastating Tropical Cyclone Winston that struck Fiji in February, there will be a lot of valuable lessons to be learned in terms of data preparedness, disaster recovery and efficient mapping systems.

As with every year, the Conference will also cover a range of GIS/RS technologies and applications, including the management of resources of the small island Pacific nations. The conference will discuss current and upcoming trends in the geographic technology fields, such as LiDAR (light detection and ranging), bathymetry, remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPAS), recent progress in vegetation and land cover mapping, improvements in satellite technologies, applications in disaster reduction and climate change adaption, web mapping, and open source software.

There will also be a number of GIS and Remote Sensing related workshops held after the conference on 2 December, as well as the Sand Bank Picnic on 3 December.
