New Soils Mapping for Hunter-Central Rivers Region

By on 5 June, 2012

Landscapes and soils remapping is underway across the Hunter-Central Rivers region by the Natural Resource Information Unit of the NSW Government’s Office of Environment and Heritage (OEH) in partnership with the Hunter-Central Rivers Catchment Management Authority (CMA).
The project aims to amalgamate the Hunter’s varied and disparate soil map datasets into a single, seamless, high-quality catchment-wide coverage. OEH is also carrying out new mapping in areas where the quality and accuracy of existing data is insufficient for today’s needs.

Resultant coverage will provide substantially improved foundation information for catchment planning. The information will be made available to the public on an interactive DVD, similar to those already published for the Hawkesbury-Nepean and Liverpool Plains catchments.

DVD content will include soil landscape descriptions, catchment-wide maps of specific soil and landscape issues (including Land and Soil Capability) and thousands of individual soil profile observations.

Mapping is currently underway in the uplands of the west and north-east Hunter-Central Rivers region, with mapping to commence in the lowlands of the Hunter Valley later this year.

Completed datasets and interactive DVD are scheduled to be delivered by late 2013
