Mosquito mapping beginning in India

By on 22 March, 2011

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) will soon create a map of mosquitoes in the state of Orissa using GIS.

Previously control of vector-borne diseases such as dengue, malaria, filaria and chikungunya have been focussed on only one disease at a time. The new map aims to map all vectors in a given location, where one common program can be created to control all those vectors, reducing duplicated efforts.

The project is currently only at early stages, with a note being sent to institutions concerned with the project, and an estimate of costs coming soon. Regardless, ICMR director general Dr VM Katoch is hoping that the project will be completed in Orissa before the monsoon season begins in July. After Orissa, the project will move to other states.
