Surveyor-General Victoria (SGV) has announced that the Mitcham electronic distance measurement (EDM) calibration baseline in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs, has re-opened.

EDM calibration baselines provide surveyors with a way to compare survey instruments to a legally traceable standard for length, verify measurement accuracy and meet regulatory requirements.

The Mitcham baseline was re-constructed as part of the Melbourne Water M22-M46 Mitcham-to-Syndal water mains renewal. It features eight deep-seated reinforced concrete pillars along the same 593m section of the Forest Hill Linear Reserve.

A new outdoor cabinet has been installed at Pillar 1 to hold ancillary equipment (e.g. umbrellas, atmospheric sensors and pillar cap key).

In announcing the re-opening, SGV thanked and acknowledged Melbourne Water, John Holland Group and Asset Survey Solutions, who constructed the baseline pillars to meet precise design specifications.

SGV also thanked and acknowledged Nacha Moore Land Surveyors who hosted the Mitcham baseline ancillary equipment and visiting surveyors for the past ten years.

More information on Victoria’s official equipment calibration requirements and details of how to book a baseline, can be found on the Victorian Department of Transport and Planning’s Equipment calibration services page.
